Facing endless court cases and harassment, Kurdish musician Ferhat Tunç has stood out as one of Turkey’s most important artists fighting for freedom of expression. His example has inspired and given hope to hundreds of thousands and is the symbolic ‘voice of the voiceless’ for Kurdish communities. Combining political analysis and great artistic skills as composer, singer and musician, Ferhat Tunç has given music censorship a face in Turkey. Although state media has forbidden airplay, his songs and messages about human rights have spread around Turkey through concerts, videos and CDs. Through his trials, the Turkish people have also learned censorship not only applies to writers and journalists.
