Featured Artist - Dr Kamal al-Labwani
Dr. Kamal al-Labwani is a Syrian doctor, artist and human rights activist. Currently serving the third year of an originally 12 year prison sentence for "inciting foreign aggression against Syria"", Dr. al-Labwani's sentence has been extended to 15 years for "insulting the Syrian president". From 2001 to 2004 he was held in solitary confinement. His family now claims that Dr. al-Labwani lives in an overcrowded cell among prisoners convicted of violent crimes who harass him for benefits from the prison administration. Dr. al-Labwani's paintings reflect on his experiences in prison and the Emergency Laws that have been in force in Syria for the past 40 years. Most of his work has been confiscated by the authorities and appeals for early release rejected.
